These label images represent some of the brands continued by Canada Foundries & Forgings, Ltd. after three companies joined together, one of which was the James Smart Mfg. Co. Ltd. These labels depicted appeared in wholesaler catalogs that were usually printed only with black and white images.
A trademark claimed to have been used by Canada Foundries & Forging Limited was the painting of the ends of their tools mahogany color and then applying a band of red, white and blue. The US trademark was No. 265,386 registered Dec. 24, 1929. The Canadian registration was No.204, folio 44,703 registered September 13, 1928. The tools cited included axes, hatchets, hammers, picks, shovels and wrenches.
Canada Foundries & Forgings, Ltd. apparently continued to operate their original plant or a second plant that was geared to producing other types of goods. Included in their output were locomotive parts, automotive parts and other heavy castings. In addition to iron and steel they also made castings in copper and bronze.
When they purchased the James Smart Manufacturing Company in 1912 they continued to manu-facture axes as well as the other products Smart was noted for. That lasted until mid 1960s. Many of the brands that James Smart marketed were continued by Canada Foundries & Forgings. Ltd. and in many cases still under the James Smart name. The significant difference was the name of the company as it appeared on the labels or the brand used on the label. Rather than indicating that the company was the James Smart Mfg. Co. some labels read JAMES SMART PLANT along with the name Canada Foundries & Forgings, Ldt.
Canada Foundries and Forgings Ltd. was formed as a result of three Canadian companies merging in 1912. The three companies were the James Smart Manufacturing Co. which was established in 1854; the Canada Forge Co. Ltd , which was established in 1906 and the Canada Billings and Spencer Co. which was formed in 1907. The James Smart Manufacturing Co. was located in Brockville. Both the Canada Forge Co. Ltd and the Billings and spencer Co. were located in  Welland.
Canada Foundries & Forgings, Ltd. became a major manufacturer of all kinds of hardware and a wide variety of tools. The James Smart Manufacturing Co. continued to manufacture axes as well as their other products until 1965. Many of the brands that James Smart marketed were also marked by Canada Foundries & Forgings. Ltd. The significant difference was the name of the company as it appeared on the labels. Rather than indicating that the company was the James Smart Mfg. Co. the labels read JAMES SMART PLANT along with the name Canada Foundries & Forgings, Ldt.
